Puerto Rico Backpacking

Caribbean Holidays, Puerto Rico Backpacking, Backpacker walking through colourful Old San Juan streets in warm February sunshine

Why Visit in February

February is an excellent month for a Puerto Rico backpacking holiday. While much of the UK is cold and grey, Puerto Rico enjoys warm days, lower humidity and plenty of sunshine. Daytime temperatures commonly sit around 27°C, making it comfortable for exploring towns, trails and beaches without the intense heat of summer.

This is also part of the island’s dry season, although short showers can still pass through, especially in the greener interior. February is popular, so book flights and hostels ahead where possible, but the lively atmosphere adds to the experience. You will find fellow travellers, local festivals and a great choice of outdoor adventures.

Start in San Juan

Begin your backpacking trip in San Juan, where historic character and Caribbean energy come together. Stay around Old San Juan, Santurce or Condado, depending on whether you prefer atmospheric streets, street art and nightlife, or easy access to the beach. Affordable guesthouses, hostels and local cafés make the capital a practical base.

Spend a morning wandering past pastel buildings and visiting the forts of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal. In the afternoon, cool off with a swim or find a small bar for a rum cocktail and some live music. San Juan is easy to explore on foot, while buses and taxis help connect the main neighbourhoods.

Rainforest and Island Trails

For a change of pace, head east to El Yunque National Forest. February’s generally pleasant weather is ideal for hiking through lush rainforest, where trails lead to viewpoints, pools and waterfalls. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and check current trail conditions before setting out, as tropical rain can make paths slippery.

Backpackers can also explore the quieter coastline and small towns beyond the capital. Public transport is limited in rural areas, so consider sharing a taxi, joining a day trip or hiring a car for a few days. The extra planning is worthwhile when you reach a quiet viewpoint or local restaurant away from the main tourist routes.

Beaches and Island Escapes

Puerto Rico is made for combining active travel with time beside the sea. Take a ferry from Ceiba to Vieques or Culebra for quieter beaches, clear water and a slower pace. Flamenco Beach on Culebra is famous for its beautiful bay, while Vieques offers peaceful coves and the chance to visit a bioluminescent bay on a guided night tour.

Pack light, use reef-safe sun cream and leave space for a towel and snorkel. February is a superb time to swim, paddle and snorkel, with comfortable sea temperatures and generally good visibility. Wherever you go, respect local communities, protect the beaches and take rubbish with you.

Practical Backpacking Tips

Puerto Rico uses the US dollar, and English is widely understood in tourist areas, although a few Spanish phrases will make your trip more enjoyable. Bring a reusable water bottle, mosquito repellent and a light waterproof jacket. Accommodation costs can rise around festivals and weekends, so flexible travellers should compare areas and travel dates.

Most of all, allow time to slow down. Chat with hostel guests, try mofongo or fresh seafood, and follow the rhythm of island life. With historic cities, rainforest adventures and outstanding beaches, a February backpacking holiday in Puerto Rico offers plenty of variety without needing to rush from one experience to the next.
