Puerto Rico Backpacking

Why Visit in March

Puerto Rico in March is a brilliant choice for a backpacking holiday. The weather is usually warm and pleasantly dry, with plenty of sunshine for exploring cities, beaches and mountain trails. It is also a lively time to visit, without the intense heat that can make long days of walking feel tiring.

Start in San Juan, where you can wander through the colourful streets of Old San Juan, admire historic Spanish forts and stop for coffee in a shady plaza. The city is easy to explore on foot, and its hostels, guesthouses and affordable local eateries make it a useful base for independent travellers.

Beaches and Islands

After a few days in the capital, head towards Puerto Rico’s coast for a change of pace. You will find broad beaches, quiet coves and warm water ideal for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding. Public transport can be limited outside the main towns, so shared transfers, local buses and occasional car hire are practical ways to reach more remote spots.

For a memorable island escape, consider a trip to Vieques or Culebra. These smaller islands offer a slower rhythm, excellent beaches and some of the clearest water in the Caribbean. Vieques is also known for its bioluminescent bay, where an evening kayak tour can reveal tiny flashes of light beneath the surface.

Rainforest Adventures

El Yunque National Forest is one of the highlights of backpacking in Puerto Rico. Well-marked paths lead through dense rainforest to viewpoints, natural pools and waterfalls, while the sound of birds and running water follows you through the trees. March is a comfortable month for hiking, although showers are always possible, so pack a lightweight waterproof jacket.

Wear sturdy shoes, carry drinking water and check trail conditions before setting out. Local guides can add useful insight into the forest’s plants, wildlife and history, and joining a small group is a good way to meet fellow travellers.

Food, Music and Local Life

Puerto Rican food is made for hungry travellers. Try mofongo, rice and beans, fresh seafood and generous roadside snacks, then cool down with a fruit drink or local coffee. Small family-run restaurants often offer the best value and the warmest welcome.

Evenings bring music, dancing and a relaxed social atmosphere, particularly in San Juan and the coastal towns. Stay in hostels for shared kitchens, social events and practical advice from other travellers. With sensible planning, March offers an excellent balance of adventure, culture and beach time on a Puerto Rico backpacking holiday.
