Why Walk in February?
February is an excellent month for a walking holiday in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. While much of Europe is deep in winter, these three Dutch Caribbean islands offer warm days, fresh sea air and plenty of sunshine. The weather is generally dry, making it comfortable to explore on foot without the heavy humidity found later in the year.
Each island gives you a quite different walking experience. Bonaire is relaxed and open, with easy coastal routes, salt pans and broad views across the Caribbean Sea. Sint Eustatius, often known as Statia, combines historic paths with green volcanic slopes. Saba is more rugged, rewarding confident walkers with steep trails, forest and dramatic mountain scenery.
Bonaire’s Open Landscapes
Bonaire is a superb choice if you enjoy unhurried walks and varied coastal scenery. Trails around the south of the island pass striking salt pans, old stone huts and huge white salt pyramids. Keep an eye out for flamingos feeding in the shallow water, while the sea shifts from deep blue to brilliant turquoise beside the road.
In the north, paths around Washington Slagbaai National Park lead through dry woodland, cactus-covered hills and quiet bays. Some routes are uneven, so sturdy walking shoes are useful, but you can choose shorter walks if you prefer a gentler day. February’s cooler mornings are especially pleasant for setting out early.
Historic Statia Trails
Sint Eustatius has a fascinating character that comes through clearly when you explore on foot. Around Oranjestad, historic ruins and old stone buildings reveal the island’s important trading past. The coastal route towards Zeelandia Bay offers a chance to combine history with wide sea views and the sound of waves below.
For a more energetic walk, head inland towards The Quill, the island’s dormant volcano. Trails climb through tropical vegetation towards the crater rim, where the landscape becomes greener and more sheltered. A local guide can add useful background about the island’s nature, geology and history, as well as helping you choose the best route.
Saba’s Mountain Paths
Saba is the island for walkers who like a proper challenge. The famous Mount Scenery trail begins near Windwardside and climbs through changing vegetation, including mossy forest and tree ferns. The steps can be steep and damp, but the atmosphere is wonderfully peaceful and the views are memorable when the cloud clears.
Other Saba trails link villages and viewpoints, giving you a closer look at the island’s friendly communities and traditional houses. Take your time, carry water and allow longer than you might expect, as the terrain can be demanding. February is a good time to walk here because the temperatures are warm but usually manageable.
Planning Your Walking Escape
Good footwear, sun protection and a reusable water bottle are essential across all three islands. Trails may be rocky, steep or exposed, so check local advice before setting off and consider a guide for less familiar routes. Comfortable accommodation and a slower pace make it easy to balance active days with time by the water.
Whether you want easy coastal walks, volcanic landscapes or challenging mountain trails, a February walking holiday in the BES islands offers plenty of variety. You can spend the morning exploring, enjoy a relaxed lunch in a local café and finish the day watching the Caribbean sunset. It is an inviting way to discover a quieter, more adventurous side of the Caribbean.
