Bonaire’s Easy Walks

Bonaire is an excellent choice if you enjoy gentle walking combined with wildlife and unusual landscapes. Trails around the southern salt pans lead past brilliant white mounds, pink water and historic slave huts, while flamingos may be feeding in the shallows. The flat terrain makes these routes comfortable for most reasonably fit walkers.

On the island’s northern side, paths near Washington Slagbaai National Park offer more variety. You can walk between cacti and rocky hills, pause at quiet beaches and look for parrots, iguanas and brightly coloured lizards. Sint Eustatius, often called Statia, combines history with peaceful countryside. Walk up the lower slopes of The Quill, a dormant volcano covered with tropical vegetation, or follow routes towards the island’s historic fort and old coastal settlements. The views across the sea are particularly clear on a fine July morning.

Some trails can be rocky or uneven, especially after rain, so walking shoes with good grip are recommended. Local guides can add real depth to the experience, pointing out medicinal plants, old plantation remains and the island’s volcanic features. Statia is ideal for travellers who like their walking holiday to include culture as well as scenery.

Saba’s Mountain Paths

Saba provides the most challenging walking in the BES islands, but the rewards are exceptional. The famous Mount Scenery trail climbs through rainforest, tree ferns and misty cloud forest, with changing views as you gain height. The route is steep in places and can be slippery, so take your time and use sturdy footwear.

For a gentler outing, explore village lanes and hillside paths around Windwardside, where neat cottages and colourful gardens sit above the sea. July can bring passing cloud, which keeps the higher trails cooler and gives the island a wonderfully atmospheric feel. A local guide is a sensible choice for longer or less familiar routes.
