Why Walk in January?

January is an excellent time for a walking holiday in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. The weather is generally warm, bright and pleasantly dry, while the trade winds can make exploring on foot far more comfortable than you might expect in the Caribbean. Days are ideal for active sightseeing, with plenty of sunshine for trails and cooler mornings for longer walks.

Each island offers a completely different walking experience. Bonaire is relaxed and open, with coastal paths, salt pans and desert-like landscapes. Sint Eustatius, often known as Statia, combines historic ruins with green slopes and volcanic scenery. Saba is the most dramatic, rising steeply from the sea with forest trails and the famous climb to Mount Scenery.

Bonaire’s Open Landscapes

Bonaire is a rewarding choice for easy-going walks and varied scenery. Near the southern end of the island, paths pass bright salt pans, old slave huts and huge white salt pyramids. The contrast between the blue sea, pinkish water and rugged land makes this one of the most memorable areas to explore on foot.

In the north, trails around Washington Slagbaai National Park lead through dry woodland and cactus-covered hills. Look out for iguanas, parakeets and flamingos, particularly around the wetlands. Some routes are uneven and exposed, so sturdy footwear, sun protection and plenty of water are essential, even during January’s more comfortable conditions.

History and Hills on Statia

Sint Eustatius is a wonderful island for walkers who enjoy history as much as scenery. Around Oranjestad, a trail through the old lower town reveals crumbling warehouses, fortifications and stone walls beside the sea. It is easy to imagine the bustling trading port that once stood here.

For a more energetic outing, head towards the Quill, the island’s dormant volcano. The route climbs through changing vegetation before reaching the forested crater, where the atmosphere feels surprisingly cool and sheltered. January is a good month for this walk, although the ground may still be slippery after a brief shower.

Saba’s Mountain Trails

Saba is the destination for adventurous walkers. The island’s roads are steep, but the real reward comes from its network of paths, including the celebrated Mount Scenery trail. Stone steps rise through lush forest, with giant tree ferns, moss and tropical plants creating a dramatic change from the drier scenery of Bonaire.

Clear January weather can bring wonderful views across the coastline and surrounding Caribbean, although cloud can gather around the summit at any time. Take the climb steadily, wear proper walking shoes and allow several hours for the return journey. Local guides are available and can add useful insight into Saba’s plants, wildlife and history.

Planning Your Walking Holiday

Pack lightweight clothing, a hat, high-factor sun cream and a reusable water bottle. Walking poles can be helpful on Saba and on rougher trails, while insect repellent is useful in greener areas. Start early whenever possible, carry a map or use a trusted local guide, and check trail conditions before setting out.
