Curaçao Scuba Diving

Diving in May

May is an excellent time for a Curaçao scuba diving holiday. The island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so you can usually expect warm weather, calm seas and good visibility beneath the surface. Days are pleasantly sunny without feeling too intense, making it easy to combine dives with time on the beach or a relaxed lunch by the harbour.

Sea temperatures are generally comfortable in May, and the water is often clear enough to make every reef, sponge and passing fish stand out. Whether you are a newly qualified diver or have years of experience, Curaçao offers an enjoyable mix of easy shore dives, boat trips and sites suited to more adventurous exploration.

Easy Shore Diving

One of Curaçao’s biggest attractions is the number of accessible shore-diving sites. In many places, you can walk from the beach into calm water and reach a lively reef without a long boat journey. This gives you the freedom to dive when you choose, return for a break and head back into the water later in the day.

Popular locations include Playa Lagun, Cas Abao and Porto Mari, where reefs shelter colourful reef fish, sea turtles and fascinating smaller creatures. The conditions are often welcoming for beginners, while experienced divers can swim further along the reef to find overhangs, drop-offs and quieter sections away from the beach.

Reefs and Wrecks

Curaçao’s underwater scenery is varied enough to keep a full week of diving interesting. Healthy coral gardens are home to parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels and clouds of smaller tropical fish. Look closely around rocks and sponges, as seahorses, nudibranchs and other small marine creatures can reward patient divers.

For something different, ask a local dive centre about wreck diving and deeper sites. The tugboat near Caracasbaai is a favourite, resting in relatively shallow water and covered in marine growth. Boat dives can also take you to reefs with impressive formations, swim-throughs and walls that disappear into the blue.

Planning Your Dives

Local dive operators can arrange equipment hire, guided dives, refresher sessions and courses, so you do not need to bring everything from home. It is worth booking early for May, particularly if you want a specific instructor, boat trip or a package that includes several shore dives.

Allow enough time between your final dive and your flight, and remember to protect yourself from the strong Caribbean sun when you are out of the water. With warm seas, dependable conditions and reefs close to the shore, May is a particularly rewarding month to discover Curaçao below the surface.
