Explore Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St Thomas, is a rewarding place to explore on foot. Wander through narrow streets lined with pastel-coloured buildings, browse duty-free shops for jewellery and local gifts, and climb the famous 99 Steps for a different view over the harbour.

The town has a strong Danish colonial character, mixed with unmistakable Caribbean energy. Stop for a coffee or a cool drink, then take time to visit historic sites such as Fort Christian before settling into a waterfront restaurant as the afternoon light softens.

Beach Days

January is perfect for enjoying the United States Virgin Islands’ beaches without the intense humidity of summer. Magens Bay on St Thomas is the best-known option, with a broad curve of sand and calm water that is suitable for swimming. Arrive earlier in the day for a quieter atmosphere and excellent light.

For a more peaceful escape, take a boat or taxi to a less busy coastal spot, or make the short journey from St Thomas to St John. Trunk Bay is famous for its clear water and underwater snorkelling trail, while nearby coves provide plenty of room to simply read, swim and enjoy the view.

Island Hopping

One of the joys of a January break here is how easily you can add another island to your itinerary. Ferries connect St Thomas with St John, and the crossing itself is a pleasant part of the experience, with bright sea, green hills and fresh breezes all around you.

St Croix offers a different pace and is well suited to travellers who want more history, local food and open space. In Christiansted, colourful waterfront buildings and old Danish architecture create a relaxed setting for an afternoon stroll, while Frederiksted is a good base for sunset walks and beach time.

Food And Evenings

Eating out is an important part of a US Virgin Islands city break. Look for fresh seafood, grilled lobster, conch, tender meats and Caribbean-style sides, alongside familiar international dishes. Local rum drinks and fresh fruit juices are ideal with a harbour view.
