July in the Virgin Islands

A July city break in the United States Virgin Islands combines Caribbean sunshine, lively waterfronts and plenty of time beside the sea. Charlotte Amalie is a rewarding place to explore on foot. Wander along the waterfront, browse jewellery shops and local boutiques, then climb the historic 99 Steps for a glimpse of the town’s Danish colonial character. The streets are compact, although the hills can be steep, so comfortable shoes are a sensible choice.

For one of the finest views in the Caribbean, take a taxi or organised tour up to Paradise Point. From the lookout, you can see the harbour, nearby islands and cruise ships below. Back in town, choose a waterside restaurant for fresh seafood, Caribbean flavours and a cool drink as the evening begins.

Beaches and water

Magens Bay is the island’s famous beach, and its broad curve of pale sand makes a memorable first stop. Other beaches, including Lindquist Beach and Sapphire Beach, offer beautiful scenery and a more laid-back feel.

Summer is a popular time for families and couples, so booking accommodation and favourite excursions ahead is wise. Staying in Charlotte Amalie keeps shops, restaurants and ferry connections close, while resorts around the island offer a quieter base with easy access to the beaches. A hire car can be useful, although taxis are widely available for popular routes.

Allow yourself a slower pace than you might use on a typical city break.
