Virgin Islands December

Caribbean Holidays, Virgin Islands December, Aerial coastal view of St Thomas, St John and St Croix in the United States Virgin Islands, bright December sunshine, turquoise Caribbean water and white beaches

Why Visit in December?

December is an excellent time for a United States Virgin Islands multi-country-style escape, particularly if you are looking for warm weather, easy island-hopping and a festive atmosphere. Temperatures are generally pleasant, rainfall is usually limited and the Caribbean Sea is invitingly warm. It is a welcome change from the colder, darker days at home.

Although the US Virgin Islands are part of one territory rather than separate countries, a multi-island holiday here offers plenty of variety. You can combine the lively energy of St Thomas with the peaceful scenery of St John, then add the more spacious, relaxed character of St Croix. Each island feels distinct, making one trip seem like several holidays in one.

Begin with St Thomas

St Thomas is often the easiest starting point, with frequent flights and a good choice of accommodation. Charlotte Amalie has a fascinating harbour, historic Danish architecture and lively streets filled with cafés, restaurants and shops. Spend a morning exploring the town before taking in the views from higher ground across the busy blue harbour.

The island also has beaches to suit different moods. Magens Bay is famous for its calm, sheltered water, while other coves offer a quieter setting for swimming and relaxing. In December, days are ideal for combining beach time with boat trips, snorkelling excursions or an evening meal overlooking the coast.

Slow Down on St John

A short ferry journey brings you to St John, where much of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park. The pace is noticeably slower, with forested hills, quiet roads and beautiful bays reached by scenic drives or walking trails. It is a wonderful contrast to St Thomas and an easy place to spend two or three nights.

Trunk Bay is particularly popular for its clear water and underwater snorkelling trail, but there are many other beaches and coves worth discovering. Pack comfortable shoes as well as swimwear, since a short woodland walk can lead to historic ruins, viewpoints and secluded stretches of coastline.

Experience St Croix

St Croix is the largest of the main islands and has a character all of its own. Christiansted and Frederiksted provide attractive waterfront settings, historic buildings and independent places to eat, while the countryside feels more open and unhurried. Allow time to explore beyond the resorts, where you will find rum heritage, local food and quiet coastal views.

December is also a lively month on St Croix, with seasonal events and community celebrations adding colour to the holiday. You can spend one day swimming and diving, another visiting cultural sights, and an evening enjoying fresh seafood in a waterfront restaurant. The island rewards visitors who like a little more space and variety.

Planning Your Island Hop

A practical itinerary might include three nights on St Thomas, two or three on St John and several nights on St Croix. Ferries are useful between St Thomas and St John, while flights are normally the simplest option for travelling onwards to St Croix. Check schedules when booking, especially around Christmas and New Year, when demand is higher.

Book accommodation and popular excursions early, as December is a favourite season for Caribbean holidays. With a little planning, you can enjoy a varied United States Virgin Islands trip that combines beaches, nature, history and welcoming island hospitality. It is the sort of winter break that leaves you relaxed, sun-warmed and already thinking about returning.
