Why Dive in September

September is a rewarding time for scuba diving in the United States Virgin Islands. The summer warmth continues both above and below the surface, and the sea is often comfortably calm for exploring reefs, walls and sheltered bays around St Thomas, St John and St Croix.

It is also a quieter period for a Caribbean holiday, so dive boats and popular sites can feel more relaxed than during the busiest winter months. With fewer people in the water, you may enjoy a more personal experience with your instructor or guide, whether you are a first-time diver or an experienced enthusiast.

What You Can See

The US Virgin Islands are known for warm, clear water and varied underwater scenery. Around St Thomas, divers can find coral gardens, rocky outcrops and marine life gathering around the reefs. Hawksbill turtles, stingrays, parrotfish and angelfish are among the encounters that can make a September dive memorable.

St John offers beautiful underwater landscapes close to the protected waters of the Virgin Islands National Park. Sites around Cruz Bay and the island’s northern coastline can include coral formations, sandy patches and lively reef fish. St Croix has its own character, with dramatic drop-offs, wrecks and excellent shore-diving opportunities in suitable conditions.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

September weather in the Caribbean is warm, but it falls within the region’s hurricane season. This does not mean that your holiday will be disrupted, although forecasts and sea conditions can change. Choose a reputable dive centre, check its cancellation and weather policies, and leave some flexibility in your itinerary.

Pack lightweight clothing, reef-friendly sun protection and a light waterproof layer for boat trips. Dive operators provide tanks and much of the specialist equipment, but many regular divers prefer to bring their own mask, computer or wetsuit for comfort. If you are newly qualified, ask about guided dives and refresher sessions before travelling.

Making the Most of September

Book with a local operator that puts safety first and knows the seasonal conditions. A good centre will check currents and visibility, explain the site clearly and adjust the plan to suit the group. Morning departures can be a sensible choice, as the sea is often at its calmest earlier in the day.

Allow time to enjoy the islands beyond diving. Swim from a quiet beach, explore Charlotte Amalie or Christiansted, and try local seafood after a day on the water. For warm seas, uncrowded dive sites and the chance to see the US Virgin Islands at a gentler pace, September can be an excellent choice for an adventurous Caribbean escape.
