January Adventures

Caribbean Holidays, January Adventures, A bright January morning on Bonaire with a small group of travellers preparing kayaks beside calm turquoise water and rugged Caribbean coastline

Start in Bonaire

January is an excellent time for an adventure holiday in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. The weather is generally warm, sunny and pleasantly dry, with light breezes that make time outdoors comfortable. You can spend your days exploring reefs, hiking volcanic slopes and discovering quiet corners of these distinctive Dutch Caribbean islands.

Bonaire is the easiest place to begin, particularly if you enjoy activities on or under the water. Its clear sea and protected coastline are ideal for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling, while the island’s celebrated shore diving gives experienced divers the freedom to explore at their own pace. Look out for colourful fish, sea turtles and coral gardens just offshore.

Dive and Explore

Bonaire’s marine park is one of the highlights of a January adventure holiday. Conditions can be wonderfully clear, and many dive sites are accessible directly from the coast, so you do not need to join a boat trip every day. A local dive centre can recommend sites to suit your experience, arrange equipment and point out the best places to see marine life.

There is plenty to do away from the sea, too. Cycle or drive through the island’s dry landscapes, visit the salt pans and watch flamingos around the shallow lagoons. Mountain bikers and walkers will find rough tracks, cactus-covered hills and broad views towards the coast. January’s comfortable temperatures make early morning excursions especially enjoyable.

Island Hopping

Sint Eustatius, often known as Statia, offers a quieter and more historical style of adventure. Hike up The Quill, a dormant volcano covered in tropical forest, and follow a local guide into its crater. The trail is rewarding rather than rushed, with unusual plants, birdlife and changing views as you climb.

On Saba, the landscape becomes steeper and more dramatic. The island is famous for Mount Scenery, the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and its rainforest trail provides a proper walking challenge. Take sturdy footwear, allow plenty of time and expect mist, damp steps and spectacular glimpses across the sea.

Plan Your Escape

Travelling in January usually means booking ahead, as this is a popular period for winter sun and diving holidays. Consider combining the islands rather than choosing just one: Bonaire is superb for water sports, Statia suits walkers and history lovers, while Saba is perfect for hiking and nature.

Pack lightweight clothing, reef-safe sun cream, a reusable water bottle and reliable walking shoes. Whether you are beneath Bonaire’s waves, on Statia’s volcanic paths or above Saba’s cloud forest, these islands offer an active Caribbean break that feels personal, uncrowded and genuinely memorable.
