Why Visit in November?

November is an excellent month for an adventure holiday in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. The islands are warm, bright and wonderfully varied, while the busiest part of the Caribbean winter season is still ahead. You can enjoy outdoor activities at a comfortable pace, with plenty of time to meet local people and discover each island’s distinct character.

Expect daytime temperatures around 30°C, warm sea temperatures and generally good conditions for exploring. A short tropical shower is possible, but it often clears quickly, leaving fresh air and brilliant light. November is also a useful time to find a good balance between availability and value, especially if you book popular accommodation and excursions early.

Bonaire Beneath the Surface

Bonaire is famous for easy-access diving and snorkelling, and November is a superb time to experience its underwater world. Reefs fringe much of the island, so you can often enter the water directly from the shore rather than joining a boat trip. Look for parrotfish, angelfish, sea turtles and clouds of small reef fish moving through the coral.

Experienced divers can explore dramatic drop-offs, wrecks and protected marine sites, while beginners have gentle bays and qualified instructors to choose from. Kayaking through the mangroves at Lac Bay offers a different perspective, with calm water and the chance to spot birds among the roots. On land, cycling and driving around the southern salt pans reveal flamingos, historic slave huts and broad coastal views.

Saba’s Mountain Trails

Saba is small, peaceful and wonderfully rugged. Its main adventure is hiking, with trails climbing through rainforest towards Mount Scenery, the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The route can be steep and sometimes slippery, but the changing scenery makes the effort worthwhile, from broad-leaved forest to misty cloud cover and open viewpoints.

Allow time to explore The Bottom and Windwardside, where neat cottages and quiet lanes show the island’s traditional side. Saba is also known for outstanding diving, with pinnacles, underwater walls and clear water attracting experienced divers. Local guides are a great choice if you want to understand the island’s plants, history and unusual wildlife as you walk.

History and Wild Coastlines

Sint Eustatius, often called Statia, combines adventurous scenery with fascinating history. Hike through the slopes and crater landscape of The Quill, a dormant volcano covered in tropical vegetation. The trail leads through a surprisingly green world, with views towards the sea and neighbouring islands on clear days.

Back in Oranjestad, you can walk among old stone buildings and visit Fort Oranje, where the island’s trading past becomes easier to picture. The surrounding waters offer diving, snorkelling and seasonal wildlife encounters, while the coastline has a quieter, more unspoilt feel than many larger Caribbean destinations. It is an ideal island for travellers who enjoy mixing active days with time spent discovering local stories.

Planning Your Island Adventure

Each island suits a slightly different style of holiday. Choose Bonaire for dependable diving, snorkelling and independent exploring; Saba for challenging walks and a peaceful atmosphere; and Sint Eustatius for volcanic landscapes, heritage and uncrowded waters. Combining two or three islands creates a varied trip, although you should allow flexibility for inter-island transport and weather.

Pack light, breathable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, reef-safe sun cream and a reusable water bottle. November is a rewarding time to visit the BES islands: warm enough for the sea, active enough for serious adventures and relaxed enough for unhurried afternoons.
