Why Visit in May

Bonaire’s Birdlife

Bonaire is often the first choice for birdwatchers, thanks to its varied scenery and reliable wildlife sightings. Saba feels completely different from Bonaire. This compact volcanic island rises steeply from the sea, and its higher slopes support lush vegetation around Mount Scenery. Walking the island’s trails in May can reveal bananaquits, bridled quail-doves and pearly-eyed thrashers among the forest growth.

The coastline is equally rewarding. Look out over the cliffs for magnificent frigatebirds, brown boobies and red-billed tropicbirds gliding on the sea breeze. Saba’s small size means you can combine a morning walk with time in the village, where local guides can help you identify calls and point out less obvious species.

Exploring Statia

Sint Eustatius, or Statia, offers a pleasing balance of history, nature and quiet birdwatching. The slopes of The Quill, a dormant volcano, are covered with tropical vegetation and crossed by trails where you may see hummingbirds, doves and Caribbean elaenias. The crater area is especially atmospheric, although sturdy footwear is recommended.

Along the coast and around the island’s historic sites, scan the skies for frigatebirds and pelicans. May is a good month to take your time, as Statia is generally peaceful and uncrowded. Local knowledge can make a real difference, so consider arranging a guided walk with someone familiar with the island’s birds.
