Scuba diving in the British Virgin Islands is a brilliant way to see a different side of this relaxed Caribbean destination. Explore the RMS Rhone

One of the best-known dive sites in the British Virgin Islands is the wreck of the RMS Rhone, close to Salt Island. This impressive British mail steamer sank during a hurricane in 1867 and now rests on the seabed as an artificial reef. Its remains are wonderfully atmospheric, with sections of the hull, propeller and machinery still visible to divers.

The wreck is home to shoals of fish and other marine life, while openings in the structure allow experienced divers to look inside. Local dive guides know the site well and can choose the most suitable route for your experience level. Even if you are not a confident wreck diver, nearby reefs offer a gentler introduction to the area’s underwater scenery.

Reefs, Caves and Marine Life

Norman Island and the waters around Cooper Island are popular for their varied diving. You may glide over coral-covered ledges, pass through rocky swim-throughs or spot parrotfish, angelfish, turtles and rays moving through the clear water. The scenery changes from one site to the next, so several dives can feel completely different.

At Peter Island, Ginger Island and Virgin Gorda, dive operators visit sites suited to a range of abilities. Some locations are shallow and sheltered, while others have steeper walls and stronger currents for divers looking for a little more excitement. Your instructor or divemaster can advise on conditions and point out small creatures that are easy to miss.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Most visitors book dives through a recognised operator based on Tortola, Virgin Gorda or one of the nearby islands. They can arrange equipment hire, boat transfers, guided trips and introductory courses, so you do not need to bring everything with you. If you are already certified, remember to bring proof of certification and details of recent diving experience.

Allow time to relax between dives and avoid flying immediately after scuba diving, following the guidance of your dive centre. The best months often bring warm water and pleasant sailing conditions, although diving is available throughout much of the year. With friendly local crews, varied sites and wonderfully clear seas, the British Virgin Islands make it easy to combine a proper diving adventure with an unhurried Caribbean escape.
