May Diving

Caribbean Holidays, May Diving, Colourful coral reef and clear turquoise water around the British Virgin Islands in bright May sunshine

Why Dive in May

May is an excellent month for scuba diving in the British Virgin Islands. The winter crowds have eased, the days are warm and the sea is usually calm enough for comfortable boat trips between the islands. Water temperatures sit around a pleasant 27°C, so most divers are happy in a lightweight wetsuit or rash vest.

Visibility can be impressive, often reaching 20 to 30 metres when conditions are right. That gives you plenty of time to spot reef fish, turtles and the shapes of wrecks before you get close. May also brings a relaxed atmosphere above water, with quiet beaches and an easy-going pace in the island restaurants.

Wreck Diving Highlights

The British Virgin Islands are especially well known for wreck diving. The RMS Rhone, lying off Salt Island, is the best-known site and a memorable choice for suitably qualified divers. Its bow, propeller and broken sections of hull are now covered in sponges and coral, while schools of fish move through the wreck.

Local dive centres can arrange trips for different experience levels, although some parts of the Rhone are deeper and better suited to experienced divers. Other wrecks and artificial reefs around the islands offer gentler alternatives, with knowledgeable guides explaining the history and pointing out small marine life that is easy to miss.

Reefs and Marine Life

Not every great dive in the BVI involves a wreck. Shallow reefs around Norman Island, Cooper Island and Virgin Gorda provide colourful scenery for beginners and experienced divers alike. Look closely among the coral and you may see blennies, moray eels, lobsters and tiny seahorses.

Turtles are regular visitors, particularly around calm reef areas and seagrass beds. Rays may glide across the sand, while larger fish patrol the edges of the reef. May is also a good time to enjoy snorkelling, so a diving holiday works well for couples or families with different levels of water experience.

Planning Your Dive Trip

Choose a dive operator with a strong local reputation and book early if you want particular sites or a private excursion. Reputable centres will match dives to your certification and experience, provide well-maintained equipment and check the weather before setting out. A short refresher session is useful if you have not dived for a while.

Allow time between your final dive and flying home, and remember to bring reef-safe sun protection, a waterproof camera and a light cover-up for the boat. After diving, you can enjoy a beach lunch, explore a quiet bay or watch the sunset from a waterfront bar. With warm water, varied sites and friendly local expertise, May is a superb time to discover scuba diving in the British Virgin Islands.
