Maho Beach Moments

Maho Beach is one of the most recognisable Instagram hotspots in Sint Maarten, and December is a brilliant time to see it. The beach sits beside Princess Juliana International Airport, where arriving aircraft pass remarkably close overhead before landing. Find a safe spot on the sand, keep an eye on the flight board and be ready with your camera.

The scene is exciting without needing much planning. Bright water, pale sand and the colourful line of beach bars create an easy holiday backdrop, while the island’s warm December weather makes it tempting to stay for a swim afterwards. Always follow local safety signs and avoid standing directly behind aircraft as they take off.

Marigot Waterfront

On the French side of the island, Marigot offers a more relaxed and stylish setting for holiday photographs. The waterfront is lined with small boats, palms and brightly painted buildings, with Fort Louis rising above the town. Climb to the fort in the morning for wide views across the bay and nearby islands.

Back in town, the market and marina provide plenty of details for an Instagram feed, from baskets of tropical fruit to local craft stalls and elegant yachts. December is a popular month to visit, so an early start gives you softer light and a quieter feel before the cafés and shops become busy.

Pinel Island Escape

A short boat trip from Saint Martin, Pinel Island feels made for holiday photography. The shallow water changes from pale turquoise to deeper blue around the reef, and the small island’s sandy beaches are backed by low palms and simple restaurants. It is an easy place to capture the Caribbean look without a long journey.

Bring a waterproof phone case if you want photographs from the water, and allow time for a leisurely lunch. December’s calm, sunny conditions are often ideal for a boat ride, although sea conditions can change, so check departure times before setting off.

Sunset Beach Views

For a more peaceful image, head to the west coast shortly before sunset. Long Bay, Baie Rouge and nearby beaches can offer beautiful evening views, with the sky shifting from gold to pink as the sun drops over the Caribbean. A simple photograph of footprints in the sand or boats offshore can be just as memorable as a busy landmark.

December evenings are warm, but it is worth taking a light layer for the journey home. Choose a beach with easy access, arrive early enough to find a comfortable position and check local advice about swimming after dark. With its mix of French and Dutch character, dramatic scenery and dependable winter sunshine, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten give you plenty of ways to fill a December holiday album.
