Maho Beach is one of the most recognisable Instagram hotspots in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten, and January is an excellent time to visit. The weather is usually warm, bright and pleasantly dry, making it easy to spend time on the sand with your camera ready.

The beach sits beside Princess Juliana International Airport, so aircraft pass surprisingly close overhead as they come in to land. Philipsburg offers a different kind of holiday photograph, with bright waterfront buildings, palm-lined streets and views across Great Bay. Take a relaxed walk along the boardwalk, then pause for a picture of the harbour as cruise ships and small boats move across the bay.

The town is also a useful place to combine sightseeing with lunch or a little shopping. Look for details such as painted doors, local signs and colourful beach umbrellas rather than photographing only the main landmarks. Visiting earlier in the day usually means cooler temperatures and fewer people in the busiest streets.

Find Marigot Views

On the French side, Marigot has a laid-back atmosphere and some of the best scenic viewpoints on the island. Climb towards Fort Louis for a broad view over the marina, rooftops and Baie de Marigot. The setting is especially striking in January, when clear skies can reveal the outline of nearby islands.

Bring comfortable shoes and allow time to enjoy the view rather than rushing through it. After taking photographs, wander back into town for a French-inspired breakfast, a fresh pastry or a leisurely lunch near the waterfront.
