Puerto Rico Holidays

Caribbean Holidays, Puerto Rico Holidays, A sunny Puerto Rico beach with turquoise water, palm trees and colourful seaside buildings

Discover Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean destination with plenty of variety, from lively city streets and historic forts to quiet beaches, rainforest trails and small coastal towns. It is an easy place to enjoy at your own pace, whether you want a relaxing beach holiday, an active escape or a mix of both.

San Juan makes a brilliant base for a first visit. You can spend the morning exploring cobbled streets and colonial buildings, then settle beside the sea for an afternoon swim. With welcoming locals, excellent food and a strong sense of character, Puerto Rico feels both accessible and distinctly different.

Old San Juan

Old San Juan is one of the most enjoyable places to explore on foot. Brightly painted buildings, shaded squares and independent shops line the narrow streets, while cafés and restaurants provide easy spots for a break. The historic atmosphere is everywhere, but the area still feels lively rather than like a museum.

Do not miss the impressive forts of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal. Their thick walls and sea views offer a fascinating glimpse into Puerto Rico’s past. Visit later in the day if you can, when the light is softer and the breeze coming from the Atlantic is particularly welcome.

Rainforest Adventures

For a change from the coast, head towards El Yunque National Forest. This lush mountain landscape is filled with palms, ferns and tropical trees, with marked paths leading to viewpoints, streams and waterfalls. Even a short walk gives you a refreshing taste of Puerto Rico’s wild side.

Wear comfortable shoes and take water, as the weather can be warm and wet. Some trails are easy, while others involve steeper sections, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out. The journey is rewarding, particularly when you reach a lookout over the forest and coastline.

Beaches and Coastlines

Puerto Rico has a beach for almost every mood. Condado and Isla Verde are convenient for San Juan, with a good choice of restaurants, hotels and water-based activities nearby. For a quieter feel, explore the beaches around the west coast or take a boat trip to one of the offshore islands.

Snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding are popular, although simply finding a shady spot and listening to the waves is just as appealing. Sunsets can be spectacular, especially along the western coast. Allow time to explore beyond the most famous stretches of sand, as smaller coves often provide the most peaceful afternoons.

Food and Local Life

Food is an important part of a Puerto Rico holiday. Try mofongo, made with mashed plantain and usually served with meat or seafood, as well as fresh fish, roast pork and tasty snacks from local kiosks. Coffee from the island’s mountain region is also well worth sampling.

Evenings are relaxed and sociable, with music, neighbourhood bars and restaurants bringing towns to life. A little planning helps if you want to visit popular eateries, but some of the best meals can come from an unplanned stop at a busy roadside café. That easy, welcoming atmosphere is one of the reasons many visitors return.
