Easy-going beach days

Puerto Rico is made for a beach holiday, whether you want a quiet stretch of sand, lively watersports or a beautiful place to swim before lunch. The island has beaches to suit every mood, with warm Caribbean water, plenty of sunshine and a friendly atmosphere that makes settling into holiday mode wonderfully easy.

Many of the best beaches are close to hotels, restaurants and local attractions, so you can enjoy a lazy morning by the sea and still have plenty to do later. Spend the afternoon with a good book, take a stroll along the shore or find a beach bar serving a cool drink as the sun begins to dip.

City beaches in San Juan

For a holiday that combines beach time with culture, San Juan is an excellent choice. Condado Beach is a popular option, with a lively setting, soft sand and easy access to shops, cafés and restaurants. It is ideal if you like having the sea close by without being far from the energy of the city.

Nearby Isla Verde offers a broad, attractive shoreline and a range of watersports, including paddleboarding and jet skiing when conditions are suitable. The atmosphere is relaxed during the day, while the surrounding area gives you plenty of options for an evening meal or a change of scene.

Island escapes and clear water

For a more peaceful experience, take a trip to Culebra, a small island off Puerto Rico’s east coast. Flamenco Beach is especially memorable, known for its white sand, clear shallow water and gently curving bay. It is a wonderful place for swimming and snorkelling, with a natural setting that feels far removed from everyday life.

Vieques is another rewarding escape, offering quiet beaches and a slower pace. Sun Bay is easy to reach and backed by green hills, while more secluded coves can be discovered with a little exploring. A boat trip or guided excursion can also reveal hidden beaches and excellent snorkelling spots.

More than sun and sand

Puerto Rico’s coastline is not only about relaxing on the beach. Try kayaking, take a scenic drive between coastal villages or visit a local seafood restaurant for a taste of island life. If you enjoy nature, combine your beach stay with a walk in El Yunque National Forest, where forest trails and waterfalls provide a refreshing change of scenery.

When planning your trip, remember that some beaches have stronger waves or fewer facilities than the more popular resorts. Ask locally about swimming conditions, take plenty of water and use sun protection. With a little planning, a Puerto Rico beach holiday can be as active or as unhurried as you choose, with memorable coastlines at every turn.
