Public transport is most useful in and around San Juan, particularly for linking neighbourhoods and nearby beaches. Walking is another enjoyable way to explore Old San Juan, where blue cobbled streets, plazas and colourful façades are close together.

If you plan to visit several distant parts of the island, compare the cost of car hire with organised excursions. A hire car offers freedom, but sharing transfers or choosing a base with good local connections can be better value. Book flights and accommodation early, travel outside peak dates where possible and keep a little flexibility in your plans for the best deals.
