January Diving

Caribbean Holidays, January Diving, Scuba diver exploring a colourful Caribbean reef in clear blue water off Puerto Rico

Why January Suits Divers

January is an excellent time for a Puerto Rico scuba diving holiday. The island is enjoying its dry season, with generally pleasant temperatures, lower humidity and plenty of bright days for getting out on the water. Sea conditions can vary, but sheltered sites often offer calm, comfortable dives.

Water temperatures remain warm enough for enjoyable diving, usually sitting around the high twenties Celsius. Most visitors are happy in a thin wetsuit or rash vest, although your dive centre can advise on the best kit for the day. Above the surface, the cooler winter air makes it easier to explore beaches, towns and rainforest after your dives.

Popular Diving Areas

Puerto Rico gives divers a good choice of underwater experiences. Around Fajardo and the nearby islands, boat trips can reach clear-water reefs, rocky formations and lively walls, with opportunities to see tropical fish, rays and turtles. The north coast also has interesting sites, although local conditions and visibility should always guide the day’s plan.

La Parguera, on the south-west coast, is another favourite base for scuba diving in January. Its calmer waters and varied marine life suit divers who want relaxed reef dives, while the surrounding coastline offers a quieter feel than the busier resort areas. Experienced divers may also find deeper sites and stronger currents that add variety to a week underwater.

What You May See

Puerto Rico’s reefs are home to colourful parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse and schools of smaller reef fish. Look closely around coral heads and rocky ledges for lobsters, crabs and moray eels. Sea turtles are regularly spotted in suitable areas, and rays may glide across sandy patches below the boat.

January can also bring memorable encounters with larger marine life, depending on where you dive and the season’s local movements. Your divemaster will know the best sites for current sightings and will help you enjoy them without disturbing the animals. Good buoyancy and a patient approach often reveal far more than rushing around the reef.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Choose a reputable Puerto Rico dive centre with qualified instructors, well-maintained equipment and small groups where possible. If you are newly certified or have not dived for a while, ask about a refresher session before joining boat trips. January can be popular, so booking dives and accommodation ahead of time is sensible.

Allow time between diving and flying, and remember that sun protection, drinking water and a light cover-up are useful after every trip. Pair your dives with a few days exploring Old San Juan, tasting local food or walking in El Yunque National Forest. With warm seas, varied sites and plenty to do on land, January is a very rewarding month for a Puerto Rico scuba diving escape.
