Puerto Rico Diving

Why Dive Puerto Rico in March?

March is an excellent time for a Puerto Rico scuba diving holiday. The island is enjoying warm, mostly dry weather, with comfortable sea temperatures and plenty of sunshine for days spent on the water. Visibility is often impressive, making it easier to appreciate coral gardens, rocky formations and the marine life below the surface.

There is also a pleasant atmosphere around the coast at this time of year. You can enjoy an early dive before relaxing on a beach, exploring a historic town or sampling fresh seafood in the evening. Whether you are a newly qualified diver or have years of experience, Puerto Rico offers a varied and rewarding underwater escape.

Where to Go Scuba Diving

La Parguera, on the south-west coast, is a popular choice for calm waters, colourful reefs and easy access to dive sites. The area is known for its mangroves, small cays and sheltered bays, creating a relaxed setting for both training dives and longer underwater excursions. Expect to see schools of reef fish, lobster and the occasional ray.

For a more adventurous experience, consider excursions to the islands of Vieques and Culebra. Their clear waters and healthy reefs attract divers looking for excellent visibility and quieter sites. Culebra is particularly well known for its marine life, while Vieques combines enjoyable diving with a laid-back island feel.

Marine Life to Expect

Puerto Rico’s reefs are home to parrotfish, angelfish, barracuda, moray eels and colourful damselfish. Sea turtles are also regularly spotted, especially around reefs and seagrass areas, although sightings can never be guaranteed. Keep a respectful distance and allow the animals to move naturally as you watch.

March can be a particularly enjoyable month for underwater photography because bright conditions above the surface often create good light below it. Bring a camera suitable for diving or ask your operator about equipment hire. A patient approach usually reveals more, from tiny seahorses and nudibranchs to camouflaged octopuses hiding among the rocks.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Choose a reputable PADI or SSI dive centre and check what is included in each trip. Boat transfers, equipment hire, lunch and park or marine reserve fees can vary, so it is worth confirming details before booking. If you have not dived recently, a refresher session is a sensible way to regain confidence.

Pack reef-safe sun cream, a light rash vest, swimwear and a waterproof layer for boat journeys. March is a popular travel period, so reserve accommodation and dive trips ahead of time, particularly if you want to visit Culebra or Vieques. With warm water, varied sites and plenty to do between dives, Puerto Rico is a superb choice for a Caribbean scuba diving holiday.
