Puerto Rico Diving

April Diving Conditions

April is an excellent month for scuba diving in Puerto Rico. The dry season is still in full swing, bringing warm days, generally calm seas and excellent underwater visibility around many of the island’s best dive sites. Water temperatures are usually comfortable enough for a thin wetsuit or rash vest, depending on how easily you feel the cold.

Above the surface, the weather is ideal for a diving holiday. There is plenty of sunshine without the intense heat that can arrive later in the year, while short showers are possible rather than constant. It is a great time to enjoy a relaxed morning dive, lunch by the coast and an afternoon exploring Puerto Rico’s historic towns or beaches.

What You Can See

Puerto Rico’s underwater scenery is varied, which makes April scuba diving especially rewarding. Around the west coast, coral gardens, rocky ledges and sheltered bays provide habitat for parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse and schools of silvery reef fish. Turtles are also regularly spotted, particularly in areas with healthy seagrass or coral.

Further offshore, experienced divers may encounter rays, barracuda and larger seasonal visitors. Visibility can often reach impressive distances, allowing you to appreciate the colours and shapes of the reef. Keep your eyes on the blue water as well as the seabed, since passing fish can appear when you least expect them.

Best Places to Dive

La Parguera, on Puerto Rico’s south-west coast, is a popular choice for relaxed reef dives and easy access to sheltered waters. The area is known for clear conditions, colourful marine life and dive operators who cater for both beginners and qualified divers. Nearby Cabo Rojo also offers interesting underwater landscapes and a quieter feel.

On the north-east coast, Fajardo is a convenient base for boat trips towards offshore reefs and islands. Divers staying near San Juan can find local sites and day tours, although travelling to the south or west may open up more varied conditions. A reputable local centre can advise on the best site for the day’s weather and your experience level.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

April is a popular travel month, so it is sensible to reserve dive trips and equipment hire before you arrive. Choose a centre with qualified instructors, well-maintained boats and a clear safety briefing. If you have not dived recently, a refresher session is a useful way to regain confidence before heading to deeper sites.

Bring reef-safe sun cream, a light cover-up, a reusable water bottle and an underwater camera if you have one. Allow time between diving and flying, and remember that local conditions can change quickly. With warm water, lively reefs and plenty to do on land, Puerto Rico in April is a superb choice for an enjoyable Caribbean scuba diving holiday.
