Puerto Rico Diving

Why Dive in October

October is an excellent month for a Puerto Rico scuba diving holiday. The summer crowds have eased, the sea is usually warm enough for a comfortable dive in a light wetsuit or rash vest, and underwater visibility can be impressive when conditions are settled. It is also a good time to enjoy the island at a more relaxed pace.

Water temperatures often sit around 28°C, making long dives especially enjoyable. Surface conditions can vary, so your dive operator will choose sites according to the forecast and local knowledge. This means beginners and experienced divers alike can find rewarding trips without needing to spend the whole day at sea.

Where to Dive

Puerto Rico offers a varied underwater landscape, from easy reef dives close to shore to deeper walls and lively offshore sites. Around Fajardo and the nearby islands, divers can explore clear water, coral gardens and rocky formations, while the south coast is known for calmer conditions and colourful marine life.

La Parguera is a popular choice for relaxed diving, with sheltered waters and a good selection of reef habitats. On the west coast, areas near Rincón and Mona Passage appeal to more experienced divers looking for larger drop-offs, stronger currents and the chance to spot turtles, rays and schooling fish.

What You May See

Puerto Rico’s reefs are full of movement and colour. Look out for angelfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish and wrasse weaving through coral heads, while barracuda and jacks may patrol the blue water beyond the reef. Sea turtles are regularly seen, particularly around seagrass beds and quieter reef sites.

October can also bring interesting seasonal encounters, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Keep an eye on sandy bottoms for rays and garden eels, and check over ledges for lobsters, moray eels and small reef creatures. A slow, observant dive often reveals far more than a hurried swim.

Planning Your Trip

Book with a reputable, locally established dive centre and tell the team about your experience level when you enquire. They can recommend suitable sites, arrange equipment hire and explain the day’s conditions. If you are new to scuba diving, introductory dives and refresher sessions are widely available.

Allow at least 24 hours between your final dive and flying home, and remember to bring proof of certification if you are joining an advanced trip. After diving, Puerto Rico offers plenty to enjoy above the surface, including historic San Juan, rainforest walks, beaches and excellent local food.

Make October Memorable

A Puerto Rico scuba diving holiday in October combines warm water, varied sites and the freedom to explore an island with a rich culture and natural beauty. You can spend the morning drifting over coral reefs, then enjoy a late lunch overlooking the sea or wander through colourful streets in the evening.

Whether you are taking your first underwater steps or returning for deeper adventures, Puerto Rico makes it easy to build a memorable October escape around diving. Choose your coast carefully, listen to local advice and leave time to enjoy everything above the water too.
