March nature in the BES islands

March is an excellent time for a nature holiday in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. Sint Eustatius has a wonderfully peaceful feel. The island’s volcanic landscape is dominated by The Quill, a dormant volcano covered with tropical vegetation. A guided hike into the crater is a memorable March activity, with shaded paths, tree ferns and the chance to hear birds moving through the forest.

There is more to discover around the lower slopes and coastline. Walk through old historic areas, visit restored Fort Oranje and look for seabirds along the shore. March’s dependable weather suits a day that combines nature, local history and a leisurely lunch in Oranjestad.

Saba’s mountain scenery

Saba is the choice for travellers who like rewarding walks and dramatic scenery. The island is steep, green and beautifully unspoilt, with Mount Scenery rising above the villages. Trails range from manageable woodland routes to more demanding climbs, so local advice is useful before setting off.

As you gain height, the vegetation changes and cloud forest creates a cool, atmospheric contrast to the warm coast. Look out for colourful birds, unusual plants and views that stretch across the Caribbean on clear days. Comfortable walking shoes, water and a sensible pace will make the experience much more enjoyable.
