September Nature Escapes
September is a rewarding time to discover the nature of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, the three remarkable islands known together as the BES islands. Each has a distinct character, from Bonaire’s calm, clear waters to Saba’s steep volcanic slopes and Sint Eustatius’s quiet historic landscape. If you enjoy wildlife, walking, snorkelling or simply being outdoors, this is a fascinating month to visit.
The islands are warm throughout September, with tropical sunshine and refreshing sea breezes. There can be short rain showers, particularly on the greener islands, but these often pass quickly and leave the landscape looking fresh. The quieter atmosphere also makes it easier to enjoy beaches, trails and reefs at your own pace.
Bonaire Underwater
Bonaire is one of the Caribbean’s best destinations for nature holidays, especially if you love the sea. Its protected marine park surrounds the island, and many excellent snorkelling and diving sites are close to shore. In September, warm water and generally good visibility create ideal conditions for spotting parrotfish, angelfish, rays and graceful sea turtles.
Look beyond the reef and you will find plenty more wildlife. The island’s salt pans and shallow lagoons attract flamingos, while cacti and dry woodland provide a striking contrast to the brilliant blue coast. A guided kayak trip through the mangroves is another excellent way to see young fish, birds and the island’s peaceful coastal scenery.
Saba’s Mountain Trails
Saba feels completely different from Bonaire. This small volcanic island rises sharply from the sea, with forested slopes, winding lanes and footpaths leading through rich vegetation. The climb towards Mount Scenery, the highest point in the Netherlands, is a memorable experience for confident walkers. Expect steps, roots and changing views as the trail enters the cloud forest.
September’s occasional showers can make the paths damp, so sturdy footwear and a light waterproof jacket are useful. They also help keep Saba wonderfully green. Along the way, listen for birds in the trees and pause at clearings to look across the Caribbean; on a bright day, the views are superb.
Statia’s Wild Side
Sint Eustatius, often called Statia, offers a relaxed blend of history and nature. The slopes of The Quill, a dormant volcano, are covered with tropical forest and crossed by trails. A walk into the crater reveals a surprisingly lush landscape, with palms, vines and birds sheltered within the volcanic bowl.
September is also a good month to explore the island’s coastline and quieter countryside. You might see seabirds above the cliffs, goats grazing near old plantation roads or marine life while swimming from a sheltered shore. Add the historic ruins of Oranjestad and Fort Oranje, and you have a nature holiday with plenty of character.
Plan Your Island Holiday
For the best BES islands nature holiday in September, combine activities rather than rushing between them. Spend time in Bonaire for reefs and wildlife, Saba for serious walking and Sint Eustatius for volcanic scenery and history. Local guides can add depth to each experience and help you discover places that are easy to miss.
Pack swimwear, sun protection, insect repellent, walking shoes and a reusable water bottle. With warm weather, varied landscapes and far fewer crowds than many Caribbean destinations, September offers a genuine opportunity to experience these islands in a calm and personal way.
