BES Nature Holidays

Discover the BES Islands

May is an excellent time for a nature holiday in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, the Caribbean Netherlands’ three remarkable islands. Each has its own character, yet all offer a refreshing mix of quiet beaches, clear seas and exceptional wildlife. You can spend the morning exploring a protected landscape and the afternoon swimming in warm water, with none of the crowds found on larger Caribbean islands.

These islands suit travellers who enjoy being outdoors and discovering places at their own pace. Bonaire is famous for accessible reefs and dry, open scenery, while Sint Eustatius combines volcanic slopes with fascinating history. Small, mountainous Saba feels especially wild, with forested trails and dramatic views across the sea.

Bonaire’s Living Reef

Bonaire is one of the Caribbean’s best destinations for snorkelling and diving, and May is a rewarding month to see its underwater world. The island’s protected marine park surrounds the coast, where coral gardens shelter parrotfish, angelfish, turtles and many smaller reef creatures. Calm bays make it easy to enter the water straight from the shore.

On land, Bonaire’s nature is just as distinctive. Drive towards Washington Slagbaai National Park to see cactus-covered hills, salt pans, flamingos and quiet coves. Early mornings are particularly pleasant for walking and wildlife watching, before the midday sun becomes strong.

Saba’s Mountain Trails

Saba is the island for walkers who like a proper sense of adventure. The settlement of Windwardside is surrounded by steep volcanic terrain, and trails lead through thick vegetation, past giant tree ferns and up towards Mount Scenery. The climb can be demanding, but the changing landscape and far-reaching views make it worthwhile.

May brings warm, humid conditions, so take plenty of water, wear sturdy footwear and start early. Clouds can gather around the summit, creating a cool, misty atmosphere in the forest. When the skies clear, views across the Caribbean are wonderfully expansive.

Statia’s Wild Side

Sint Eustatius, often known as Statia, offers a quieter and less-visited Caribbean experience. The Quill, a dormant volcano, rises behind Oranjestad and supports lush forest within its crater. A guided walk can reveal tropical plants, colourful birds and the island’s fascinating volcanic geology.

The coast also rewards exploration, with black-sand beaches, rugged cliffs and clear water for swimming or snorkelling. Combine a nature walk with a visit to the historic forts and ruins around Oranjestad, and you get a holiday that balances outdoor activity with local culture.

Planning Your May Escape

May is generally warm across the BES islands, with plenty of sunshine and occasional showers that keep the vegetation fresh. Pack light clothing, reef-safe sun cream, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle. Comfortable shoes are essential if you plan to explore national parks or mountain paths.

Choose Bonaire for easy-going water activities, Saba for hiking and Sint Eustatius for a blend of nature and history. Whichever island you visit, take time to slow down and look closely: the appeal lies in the quiet trails, healthy reefs and small wildlife encounters that stay with you long after the holiday ends.
