Bonaire Nature Holidays

October Island Escapes

October is a rewarding time for a nature holiday in the BES islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. These three Dutch Caribbean islands each have a distinct character, from Bonaire’s dry, open landscapes and protected reefs to Saba’s steep volcanic slopes and Sint Eustatius’s historic harbour and green hills. Together, they offer a quieter alternative to the Caribbean’s larger resorts.

The weather is generally warm, with plenty of sunshine and refreshing showers that help bring new colour to the landscape. October sits within the wetter part of the year, so it is sensible to plan outdoor activities with flexibility. In return, you may find peaceful trails, uncrowded beaches and excellent opportunities to see wildlife at its most active.

Bonaire Beneath Water

Bonaire is one of the Caribbean’s best-known destinations for diving and snorkelling, and October is a fine month to explore its marine parks. The island’s protected reefs begin close to shore in many places, making it easy to spend a morning in the water without joining a long boat trip. Look for parrotfish, angelfish, turtles and rays moving through the coral.

On land, the Washington Slagbaai National Park combines rugged coast, cactus-covered hills, salt pans and quiet coves. Drive slowly along the park roads, stopping to watch flamingos around the shallow lagoons or climbing to a viewpoint over the Caribbean Sea. Early mornings are especially pleasant for walking, photography and birdwatching before the heat builds.

Saba’s Mountain Trails

Saba feels wonderfully different from Bonaire. The island rises sharply from the sea, and its famous Mount Scenery trail leads through lush forest towards the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. October showers can make the vegetation look especially fresh, although the steps may be slippery, so sturdy footwear is essential.

Guided walks are a good choice if you want to learn about Saba’s unusual plants, birds and geology. The island is also renowned for diving, with dramatic underwater pinnacles and clear water. Between activities, enjoy the peaceful villages of Windwardside and The Bottom, where white cottages and red roofs sit among green hills.

Wild Sint Eustatius

Sint Eustatius, often called Statia, rewards curious travellers with a mixture of nature and history. The Quill, a dormant volcano, rises behind Oranjestad and contains a forested crater that can be reached by a well-marked trail. The walk offers changing views of palms, orchids and dramatic volcanic rock.

Along the coast, protected waters provide opportunities for snorkelling, diving and spotting seabirds. You can also explore historic ruins near the waterfront, then pause in town for a relaxed meal and a view across the bay. Statia’s small scale makes it easy to combine outdoor adventures with a taste of local life.

Planning Your Trip

Pack light clothing, sun protection, insect repellent and a waterproof layer for October showers. Comfortable walking shoes are important on Saba and Sint Eustatius, while reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest are useful for time in the sea. Check local park guidance before setting out, particularly after heavy rain.

Whether you choose one island or combine all three, the BES islands offer an authentic Caribbean nature holiday. October brings warm seas, active wildlife and a welcome sense of space, making it an excellent month for travellers who prefer trails, reefs and memorable landscapes to busy resort beaches.
