Why Visit in December?

December is an excellent time for an adventure holiday in the United States Virgin Islands. The weather is generally warm, sunny and pleasantly breezy, making it easy to spend long days outdoors without the intense heat of midsummer. Sea temperatures are inviting too, so you can move between land and water adventures whenever you fancy.

The islands each have their own character. St Thomas combines lively harbours, scenic viewpoints and easy access to the sea, while St John is known for protected natural beauty and excellent trails. St Croix offers a more relaxed pace, with reefs, historic sites and plenty of space to explore independently.

Hiking and Nature

St John is a natural choice for walkers. Much of the island is protected within Virgin Islands National Park, where trails lead through dry forest, past old plantation ruins and towards quiet beaches. The Reef Bay Trail is a rewarding option for keen walkers, with a chance to see tropical plants and historic remains along the route.

For something shorter, choose a coastal path near Cruz Bay or head towards Ram Head for broad views across the water. Wear sturdy footwear, take plenty of water and set off early, when the trails are cooler and the light is particularly good for photographs.

Clear water and sheltered bays make the US Virgin Islands ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling. On St Croix, Buck Island Reef National Monument is a highlight for boat trips and snorkelling. You may see colourful fish, sea turtles and coral formations beneath the surface. December can be a popular month, so booking excursions ahead is sensible, particularly around Christmas and New Year.

Sailing and Island Hopping

A day on the water gives you a different view of the islands. Join a sailing trip from St Thomas or St John, or arrange a private charter if you want a more flexible itinerary. Stops often include secluded beaches, excellent snorkelling spots and small islands that are difficult to reach by land.
