Why Visit in May?

May is an excellent time for an adventure holiday in the United States Virgin Islands. The busy winter season has eased, so beaches and trails often feel more relaxed, while the weather remains warm and inviting. Expect plenty of sunshine, refreshing sea breezes and daytime temperatures that are ideal for being outdoors.

This is the point in the year when the islands feel particularly easy-going. You can enjoy St Thomas, St John and St Croix at a comfortable pace, with time to swim, hike, sail and explore without constantly watching the clock. A light shower is possible, but it usually passes quickly and can leave the hills looking wonderfully green.

Sea Adventures

The clear waters around the US Virgin Islands are made for adventure. Hire a kayak or join a guided trip around quiet coves, where you may see sea turtles, colourful fish and rays moving beneath the surface. St John is especially appealing for paddling, with calm bays and protected coastline around Virgin Islands National Park.

Snorkelling is another highlight of May. The water is warm enough for long swims, and reefs near beaches such as Trunk Bay and Waterlemon Cay offer a close look at the islands’ lively marine life. For a bigger day out, book a sailing excursion between the islands or take a boat to nearby cays for swimming and snorkelling in uncrowded water.

Hiking and Exploring

On land, the islands offer trails for both casual walkers and keen hikers. St John has some of the best-known routes, including paths through tropical woodland to historic plantation ruins and secluded beaches. The Reef Bay Trail is a rewarding choice for travellers who enjoy a longer walk and want to combine scenery with a glimpse into the island’s past.

St Thomas also has plenty to discover, from viewpoint walks above Charlotte Amalie to rocky coastal paths and nature reserves. St Croix feels more spacious and varied, with opportunities to explore rainforest, beaches and historic sites in the same day. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and start earlier if you prefer cooler conditions.

Plan Your May Trip

A little planning will help you make the most of an active US Virgin Islands holiday. Choose accommodation close to the activities you enjoy, or split your stay between islands to experience different landscapes. Ferries and boat trips make island-hopping possible, although schedules can change, so leave some flexibility in your plans.

Pack swimwear, sun cream, a hat, insect repellent and comfortable walking clothes. Most importantly, allow time for slow lunches, beach stops and sunset views. With warm seas, fascinating landscapes and a friendly Caribbean atmosphere, May is a superb month for an adventure holiday in the United States Virgin Islands.
